US Open men’s final: Daniil Medvedev shocks Novak Djokovic, ending his bid for the Grand Slam
Daniil Medvedev defeated Novak Djokovic 6–4, 6–4, 6–4 to win the men’s singles title at the 2021 US Open. With the victory, Medvedev thwarted Djokovic’s bid, becoming the primary person in 52 years to win the four major companies — the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon, and therefore the US Open — also referred to as the civil year. slam is often Medvedev’s first slam singles title of his career.
Djokovic was trying to become the primary man to finish a slam since Rod Lever in 1969. Only five players within the history of tennis have won four Grand Slams during a calendar year: Graf (1988), Court (1970), Maureen Connolly (1953), Don Buzz (1938), and Lever (1962, 1969).

With Sunday’s victory, Medvedev also closed Djokovic’s chance (at least this season) to overtake rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for the all-time men’s record at the slam singles title. Now, Djokovic will end this tennis season together with his ‘Big Three’ rivals with 20 slam titles.
Djokovic, the youngest within the Big Three at 34, has won eight of his 20 major championships within the last three years. Both Nadal (35) and Federer (40) missed the US Open this year thanks to injuries. However, Djokovic tied Federer with 31 within the most slam final in history.
“I want to mention that tonight, albeit I didn’t win the match, my heart is filled with joy and that I am the happiest man because you guys made me feel so special on the court,” Djokovic said. Loss, fight back tears. “I’ve never felt that way in NY .”
Medvedev made an excellent start to the championship match. His first and second serve was incredible and on just one occasion did Djokovic, one among the simplest returnees within the world, break it 5–3 within the third set. Together with his impressive hard court speed — he’s the fastest on the road at the instant — Medvedev apparently reached for each ball, causing Djokovic to crawl to select up the pieces after a couple of drop shots.
Djokovic, perhaps tired or nervous, looked sluggish at the beginning of the match. It clothed that Medvedev had made some serious preparations after the pair’s last meeting at the Australian Open in February this year, where Djokovic dominated.
